Our Story

More Than a Festival

My name is Omar Mansah Beh Love, and I founded this nonprofit because I believe everyone deserves a place where they belong. Growing up, I often struggled with my sense of identity. The hardships I experienced made me feel like I didn't truly belong anywhere. In trying to fit in, I slowly lost sight of who I was—my traditions, my values, and the culture that shaped me. It took time to realize that my identity was never something I needed to hide, but something to embrace and celebrate.

One of the things I longed for most as a child was the warmth of family—seeing people come together, share meals, celebrate milestones, and create lasting memories. That experience inspired a dream: to help create spaces where others can experience the sense of love, connection, and community that every person deserves. This organization was born from that dream.

Our mission is to create a welcoming place where the beauty of Africa can be celebrated and shared with everyone. We want people to experience the richness of African culture through its art, food, music, dance, traditions, and the powerful rhythms of its drums. We believe these traditions have the power to inspire, educate, and bring people together.

Most importantly, our vision extends beyond celebrating culture. We are committed to building bridges across all communities in Des Moines, Iowa. We believe that when people connect across cultures, backgrounds, and experiences, stronger relationships are formed, meaningful partnerships are created, and opportunities for collaboration in business, education, and community development become possible. Our hope is that every person who walks through our doors feels seen, valued, and welcomed. Together, we can celebrate our differences, embrace our shared humanity, and build a more connected and united Des Moines for generations to come.
